Red Hot Chili Peppers for my 22nd Birthday
I can’t believe I didn’t take my camera. For some stupid reason I figured it would be taken off me, and usually I go to concerts with nothing but my eftpos card and ID shoved into my ciggy packet in my jeans pocket. You tend to lose a lot in mosh pits.
But this time I was seated, quite close to the stage with a fantastic view of everything. So this is my official opinion on the RHCP concert, 21st of April 2007.
Lets start with the first band. I have no idea what they were called but they were absolute rubbish. Highlights included when the drummer got up and walked across the stage and like MAGIC there were still drums playing. The lead singer looked like a fatter version of Bill Murray, complete with balding hair and pot belly. Which we all saw in a lot more detail when he started taking his clothes off. He completed one song with his nipple hanging out of his singlet, complete with pink pants which were soon to come off. And they did. We were all treated to a fat man bouncing round the stage in his undies. Not boxers. Undies. “Your boos make me stronger!” he announced.
There was a helleva lot of beer thrown. Considering it was $7 a plastic cup, you figured the crowd hated them enough to actually throw it instead of drink it. The 3 piece band then attempted a human pyramid for their last song, I’m pretty sure the bassist got sconed in the head with a well aimed beer cup.
Chilli Peppers came out at around 8.30pm. Amazingly enough, the arena wasn’t anywhere near as packed at this point as I thought it would have been, considering the show sold out in 10minutes. It kinda of filled up a bit more near the end though. To be honest, the first song kind of lacked that high energy that I was expecting. They kinda stopped for drinks quite a bit as well, fair enough I spose. By about the 3rd song in I was absolutely sold, Chilli Peppers are a fantastic band and amazingly talented musicians.
They had every single person in that massive arena singing along loudly to their better known hits like Scar Tissue, Californication, Hey Oh, By the Way (which went OFF!!) and Suck My Kiss. I was kinda disappointed not to hear Give It Away but hey it was still a awesome concert. John Frusciante the guitarist sung a wicked solo, man if Anthony Kiedis ever left the band, that guy could definitely take over the vocals. Flea sung his own solo as well, also with a great voice, however the sound for the random trumpet solo he did wasn’t too shit hot. Encore was Higher Ground, and then like a 30min random jam. Anthony had left the stage at this point… he just kinda gapped and left his band up there.
I had a awesome time, was a well awesome present from my parents for my 22nd :-)
The walk back to the hotel was memorable, Slayer had just finished as well so Queens Street was sporting some fantastic freakish characters. I walked past a guy that was actually wearing CHAINMAIL. He must have sweated his ass off under that. Hehe it was quite funny.
Anyways I doubt anyone actually read all that… might try and get some photos of the concert to add here also.
